I'm a Professor of Mental Health and Capacity Law at the School of Health and Social Care. I lead the Centre for Mental Health Practice, Policy and Law Research and have founded the Centre for Mental Health and Capacity Law.
My research focuses on international, European, and national human rights, mental health, and mental capacity law. I'm particularly interested in decision-making, supported decision-making, and law and policy reform.
I work with public, voluntary, and regulatory organizations in mental health, mental capacity, and human rights. My recent work includes law and policy reform, stakeholder experiences of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland, and the impact of COVID-19 on persons with mental disabilities.
I take an interdisciplinary approach, collaborating with academics and stakeholders from various fields. I'm a council member of the Scottish Universities Law Institute and a member of several international networks.
I welcome inquiries and applications from potential Ph.D. candidates relating to my research interests.
